A Timeline of Growth and Milestones
November 2011
Tommy de Guia envisioned forming a children's choir as part of the Kalayaan Cultural Community Centre (KCCC) youth programs. Following auditions, the KCCC Children's Choir was established, with rehearsals led by Imelda Papa, the Musical Director of the Philippine Choral Society of Mississauga.
May 2012
The newly formed choir members showcased their talents in their first public performance.
September 2013
After the disbandment of the KCCC Children's Choir, 14 family members joined a newly formed ensemble. Recognizing the choir's potential and desire for independence, it was officially founded as a not-for-profit organization named Musika Mississauga. Mercedes Cabioc became the first Musical Director, while Candace Santos took on the role of Voice Instructor.
November 2013
Musika Mississauga Children's Chorus held its inaugural fundraising event, A New Beginning, securing financial support and expanding its reach within the community.
August 2014
Musika Mississauga Children's Chorus held its first full concert, On Common Ground, at the KCCC. The event showcased the choir’s musical talents and helped establish its presence in the local music scene.
September 2015
Candace Santos transitioned to the role of Musical Director, bringing new artistic direction and expertise to the growing choir.
February 2019
The choir was officially incorporated as a federally recognized not-for-profit organization and renamed Musika Children's Chorus. Later that year, they held their first free concert open to the public, Pamaskong Handog (Christmas Offering), as a musical gift to the community during the holiday season.
February 2020
Musika Children's Chorus received charitable organization designation from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), further establishing their commitment to community engagement through music.
September 2021
Adapting to technological advancements, Musika Children's Chorus performed as a virtual choir at the Philippine Festival Mississauga's Crossing Barriers event, demonstrating their resilience and innovation in performance.
January 2022
To support young musicians, Musika Children's Chorus launched a bursary program, providing financial assistance for advanced training to members facing financial difficulties.
May 2023
Musika Children's Chorus received official recognition from the City of Mississauga through the Community Group Registry Program under the Arts and Culture Provider and Clubs category. This recognition solidified their role as a key contributor to the local arts and cultural landscape.
Present and Future
From its beginnings as a choir within the KCCC youth programs to an independent organization nurturing young musical talents, Musika Children's Chorus continues to inspire and uplift audiences through the beauty of choral music.
